How to Prepare Your Boat for Summer: A Complete Maintenance Checklist
Share
Summer is the best time to be on the water in Australia — but nothing ruins a perfect day out like an unexpected breakdown. A little preparation goes a long way. Here's our complete pre-summer maintenance checklist to keep your boat running safely and reliably all season long.
1. Engine Service
Your engine is the heart of your boat, so start here. Check and replace engine oil and filter, inspect the fuel lines for cracks or leaks, replace spark plugs if needed, and flush the cooling system. If you have an outboard motor, check the gear oil in the lower unit and inspect the propeller for dings or damage. A bent prop can cause vibration and reduce fuel efficiency significantly.
2. Hull Inspection
Give your hull a thorough once-over. Look for any cracks, stress fractures, or corrosion — especially around fittings and welds on aluminium boats. Clean off any barnacles or growth if the boat has been in the water, and check that all drain plugs are in good condition and sealing properly.
3. Safety Equipment Check
Australian maritime law requires specific safety equipment on board depending on your vessel size and where you're boating. Check that your life jackets are in good condition and the right size for all passengers, your flares haven't expired, your fire extinguisher is charged, and your anchor and rope are in good working order. It's also a great time to test your bilge pump.
4. Electrical & Electronics
Test all navigation lights, the bilge pump switch, and any onboard electronics including your GPS, fish finder, and VHF radio. Check battery terminals for corrosion and ensure your battery holds a full charge. A flat battery out on the water is a common — and easily avoidable — problem.
5. Trailer Maintenance
Don't overlook your trailer. Check tyre pressure and tread depth, inspect wheel bearings (repack with grease if needed), test all trailer lights, and make sure the winch strap and safety chains are in good condition. A well-maintained trailer makes launching and retrieving your boat much easier and safer.
